New York Public Library's Jerome Robbins Dance Division Dance Research Fellowship

Due May 14, 2021

The seismic events of 2020 continue to shape daily life and have compelled reckoning and reflection. For the upcoming cohort of the Dance Research Fellowship the Jerome Robbins Dance Division invites applications from scholars and practitioners interested in investigating the theme of dance and democracy. We are interested in projects that explore dance’s site as a civic, social and political space and welcome research on the potential within dance for collective action. We additionally encourage applicants to explore the dance artists in our archives who have harnessed kinetic  imagination and empathetic power to create inclusive environments where dialogue and democracy thrives. Fellowship stipends are $7,500 and the research period is July 1 - December 31, 2021. Questions about the Dance Research Fellowships should be directed to the curatorial staff.  Find more detailed information about the dance research resources of The New York Public Library. Eligibility:  Only US citizens, permanent residents and foreign nationals who are US residents for tax purposes may apply.

Dance Research Fellowship important dates

Application Deadline:  May 14, 2021

Notification:  June 18, 2021

Award Period:  July 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021

Application:  A complete application consists of three parts: the application form, a project proposal (including an abbreviated CV) and a professional letter of recommendation.  The project proposal is to include a general description or abstract of the research project, its title and format, and the applicant's contact details. Applicants should identify specific material(s) to be consulted during the desired dates of the fellowship period.  Successful applications will also include an in-depth explanation of how collections existing only at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division are essential to the progress and completion of the research project. The proposal and CV should be no longer than 5-pages in length.

Completed applications should be submitted no later than May 14, 2021, through The New York Public Library's Fellowship Portal, where applicants are invited to create an account and upload a CV and then apply for the Dance Research Fellowship specifically.

Previous successful applicants to the Dance Research Fellowship are not eligible to apply.

Fellowship Announcement:  The awarding of the fellowships will be announced on June 18, 2021.  Fellowship recipients and their research projects will be acknowledged on The New York Public Library website and in Library publicity.

Residency:  Fellows must take up residency between July 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021.  Fellows are not expected to be in continuous residence for the duration of the fellowship award period but must provide evidence of progress during mandatory check in points throughout the residency. Given the uncertainty of the duration of the Covid-19 crisis, the Division is making provision for a virtual version of the fellowship and symposium should onsite study and practice prove impossible. In preparing your application we encourage you to identify digital resources in addition to our overall holdings that can assist you with your research.

Fellowship Symposium:  Each fellow will be required to participate in a symposium on January 28, 2022 where they will deliver a presentation on the outcome of their research.  Applications for practice as research are welcomed so the final presentation may take the form of a performance in lieu of a paper.
