Visiting Faculty - Dance

The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is seeking applications for a full-time, one-year visiting faculty position to begin in August 2021. Duties will include teaching at least two of the following: hip hop, urban dance, West African dance, and jazz dance, plus additional theory and/or studio courses from the dance curriculum. The position will require the individual to choreograph for department concerts and productions; mentor-student dancers and choreographers; participate in auditions and recruitment activities; and participate in the performance life of the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Demonstrated teaching expertise in at least two of the following: hip hop, urban dance, West African (classical and/or contemporary), and historically/culturally rooted jazz dance forms.
  • Ability to teach additional courses in one or more of the following from a position de-centering Whiteness: choreography/composition, dance history, pedagogy, repertory.
  • Terminal degree in dance or a related discipline and/or equivalent professional experience in the candidate’s field of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated evidence of choreographic work in the candidate’s area(s) of expertise
  • One or more years of teaching experience in higher education
  • Experience in or demonstrated understanding of social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
  • Ability to teach in both face-to-face and online environments

Salary: $40,000
