Teaching Assistant Professor- Dance

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Dance seeks candidates for a position of Teaching Assistant Professor of Dance. This is a one-year, full-time non-tenure track appointment. Primary specialization should be in teaching Ballet with additional expertise in physical practices that may include contemporary expressions of techniques ranging from African, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Modern. Secondary expertise in teaching somatic practices or choreographic process is also desired. Other duties may include choreographing or occasional directing of departmental concerts, undergraduate advisement, assisting with recruitment activities and service on departmental committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Dance or a related field. (Candidates with equivalent professional experience will be considered for appointment at the rank of clinical assistant professor.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Primary specialization in teaching Ballet with additional expertise in physical practice that may include African, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Modern. Secondary expertise in somatic practices (Yoga, Feldenkrais, Pilates) choreographic process, dance studies/theory, performance studies, pedagogy.
  • Three years of combined teaching and professional experience in a field relevant to the course(s) being taught. Merit-based exceptions to this qualification will be considered.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Teach all levels of major and non-major technique in primary area of expertise; teach additional undergraduate courses in areas of secondary expertise; choreograph for departmental concerts; occasional directing of departmental concerts; undergraduate advisement; assisting with recruitment activities; academic advising; service on departmental committees.

Proposed start date: August 16, 2021

Salary: Commensurate with rank and experience.
