Music Director for Theatre and Dance

Serves as music director for all curricular and co-curricular programming in the Dance Unit ensuring that both education and performance are congruent with appropriate artistic expectations. The director (1) provides and/or organizes continuity and quality music support and accompaniment for dance classes; (2) organizes ongoing excellence in the operation and acquisition of music related computers, software, equipment, and instruments: (3) organizes part-time musician staff; and (4) supports students in their course work in regards to all aspects related to music.


  • Accompany dance class sessions on keyboard, drums or other instrument.
  • Teach a dance class once yearly, teaching music components of choreography courses, develop music curriculum for the Dance Program.
  • Acquire, maintain, and organize for professional maintenance as needed for all Dance Program sound equipment and instruments. Supervise maintenance of Sound system under the direction of the Technical Director of the Theatre Program.
  • Hire Supervise, and train musicians involved in production and class accompaniment.
  • Supervise all student and faculty musical selections for dance concerts in coordination with the dance director. Prepare and arrange music for dance concerts. Compose music for dance productions when desirable, appropriate, and possible.
  • Accompany or organize music for dance department events, both on campus and off campus.
  • Assist with purchasing musical instruments and sound equipment. Oversee instrument use and maintenance (coordinate piano tuning, percussions instrument repair, and instrument use by students.) Maintain current inventory of all equipment in the Dance Program.
  • Actively engage in ongoing research-creative work and/or professional development, including staying current with diverse and inclusive pedagogy around Western/Non-western and traditional/contemporary musical forms (listen to music for dance, attend dance events, compose, et al.)
  • Represent LMU within describe community and at professional organizations or associations, serve on committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in progressively responsible positions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of:
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in Music theory, music performance, music pedagogy, sound technology (i.e. current music software, computers, and electronic music equipment).
  • Fundamental knowledge of dance as an art form.
  • Established experience with composing for dance.
  • Requisite technical skills (including, but not limited to: rhythm, tempo, sound quality, phrasing, moods) and sensibilities (including, but not limited to: attentiveness, patience, imagination, joy of collaboration) for Dance Accompaniment.
  • Teaching and/or working with students, or younger, beginning-stage artists
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral).
  • Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of relevant systems (e.g. QLab).


  • Minimum of B.A. or B.M. degree in music for the equivalent professional or academic expertise.
