Dance Studies Association

Dance Studies Association (DSA) is seeking to fill a part-time contract position for an Executive Director to join its administrative management team. Working independently, but alongside Association Executives Group (AEG), the Executive Director will oversee DSA’s operations and interact closely with the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will bring a strong knowledge of the discipline in addition to skills in administrative management, conference planning and organizational development.

Dance Studies Association is a constituent member of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). With an annual operating budget of $200,000 (USD), DSA is an international organization of dance scholars, educators, and artists that aims to strengthen the visibility of dance as embodied practice, creative endeavor and intellectual discipline. Formed in 2017 as the merged entity of the Congress on Research in Dance (CORD) and the Society of Dance History Scholars (SDHS), DSA is both grounded in and extends the work of those two organizations. Bringing the field of dance studies into the twenty-first century, DSA showcases the tremendous growth of research and publication over the past fifty years. Annual conferences draw together hundreds of scholars and artists to share research, award path-breaking scholarship, and discuss pressing issues in a global and diverse field. DSA advances the field of dance studies through research, publication, performance, and outreach to audiences across the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Qualifications: Advanced degree in a humanities-based discipline preferred, as well as 2 to 5 years of administrative experience.

Preference for this contract position will be given to candidates with an academic background in dance studies.

Must have working permit for U.S.

Hours: 60 hours per month

Salary range: $30.00-$40.00 per hour

Term: one-year contract with the possibility of renewal or conversion to employee


  • Acts as main point of contact between the Board of Directors/Editorial Boards and AEG staff
  • Member communication: monitor info@ email and reply to all emails; e-blasts and newsletters; maintain membership database and all mailing lists
  • Contracts: conference hotels; conference MOU; all other vendor contracts
  • Conferences: insurance; budget; ad sales and publication displays; on-site registration
  • Website: all front end updates and ongoing changes
  • Create and maintain social media presence for DSA
  • Publications: mailing lists to Cambridge University Press and University of Michigan/University of Wisconsin
  • Board of Directors: coordinate with President to schedule meetings/prepare documents/board insurance/catering/ZOOM set-up.
  • Prepare monthly reports: membership/income/expenses/report on specific initiatives
  • Financial: submit bills payments; donation receipts; work with the DSA board on annual budget; coordinate with AEG finance department
  • Development: annual withdrawal of investment income for prizes; quarterly update to board
  • Create strategic fundraising plan
  • Organizational development: strategic plans; policy and procedures document creation and updates; board orientation materials and execution; investment policy
  • ACLS: participate in ACLS discussion groups
