Assistant Professor, Tenure Track (classical/contemp ballet)

Position: Tenure track, Assistant Professor in Dance for Dance Department with classical and contemporary ballet focus, professional experience, choreographic and/or staging expertise required.

Responsibilities: Major teaching responsibilities include intermediate – advanced classical and contemporary ballet techniques including classical pas de deux, men’s technique and variations, women’s pointe and variations, pedagogy (theory/application), as well as choreographing and/or restaging ballets for student performances. Additional experience in one or more of the following areas: arts administration, choreography dance for camera/technology, dance appreciation, dance history/theory. World dances, hip hop, or other dance related specializations are a plus.  The position requires student advising and department/university committee work.

Qualifications: PHD, MFA or MA with teaching experience in higher education.  Substantial professional performing experience.  Ability to sustain a professional approach of excellence within all major courses combined with a respect for the traditional liberal arts curriculum and a commitment to the development of future leaders for dance required.  The ideal candidate will have a high-energy persona, a sense of humor, be a team player with a positive attitude and the ability to sustain an even balance of discipline and a nurturing approach toward the students.  Experience in arts administration, dance technology/media, costume design/construction or technical theater also considered. Strong administrative and computer skills are a plus.

Salary and Title: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

University/Department Information: Mercyhurst University is a Catholic liberal arts institution with an enrollment of 3,500.  It is located in the western panhandle of Pennsylvania on the shore of beautiful Lake Erie. The Department of Dance, located in the Hafenmaier College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, offers BA and BFA degrees in Dance with a classical ballet focus, a concentration in pedagogy and a minor in arts administration. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), our program currently serves 78 majors, houses two in-residence companies, and routinely collaborates with community partners. The danceSpace complex is adjacent to the Art Department, D’Angelo Department of Music and neighbors the 825 seat Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.
